Spencer Pride LGBT History Month Event To Take Place At The Historic Tivoli Theater

  • by

SPENCER, INDIANA – The recently restored Tivoli Theater in downtown Spencer will be the site of Spencer Pride’s LGBT History Month event “A Night at the Tivoli.”   The event, which is admission-free thanks to generous sponsors of Spencer Pride, Inc., will take place on Wednesday, October 9th at 7:00 PM.  The public is welcomed and encouraged to attend this community event.  The Quarryland Men’s Chorus, a talented group who performed at the Spencer Pride Festival for the past three years, will be entertaining the crowd during intermission.

“To say that we are excited to hold the event at the beautiful Tivoli Theater would be such an understatement,” says Spencer Pride Inc.’s president Jonathan Balash.  Balash, who was recently invited to the White House as an LGBT community leader, explained why this year’s event is going to be so special to the not-for-profit organization that he leads.

“’A Night at the Tivoli’ is by far the largest non-festival event we’ve ever organized,” he said.  “To hold it at the historic Tivoli and show a major film like The Birdcage is not cheap, but we believe that the investment we have made in this event will yield a high return if it helps expose attendees to something a little different than their usual Wednesday night activities.”   Balash says that The Birdcagewas chosen to ensure that the event would be a night filled with fun and laughter.  The Birdcage was an Academy Award nominated comedy and features Robin Williams, Nathan Lane, Gene Hackman, and Dianne Wiest.

Owen Valley Winery, a recently announced member of the Indiana Uplands Wine Trail, will have their tasting room open for special hours throughout the entire event to lure filmgoers into sampling their wine.  The winery’s tasting room is adjacent to the Tivoli and will be open from 6:00 PM until 10:00 PM.  Anthony Leaderbrand, owner of Owen Valley Winery, is hoping that people will take the opportunity to try their recently released Zinfandel.   Although no alcohol can be taken from the winery into the theater, the tasting room will undoubtedly be a popular spot before and after the film and during intermission.

“A Night at the Tivoli” will also feature a silent auction with items from the local art community.  Framed photographs, paintings, glass art, sculptures, and other types of art will be available.

Many individuals and businesses are sponsoring “A Night at the Tivoli,” including Susan Bookout & Deandra Wallace, and Jackie Hall & Lloyd Orr, who have made generous donations to ensure that the event would remain admission-free.

In addition to the family-friendly Tivoli event, Spencer Pride, Inc. is coordinating educational displays in more than thirteen libraries and public schools.  This is the fifth year that the organization has offered educational displays to libraries for Gay History Month, but it is the first year that those displays will also appear in area schools.
