Each month, the directors of Spencer Pride will be bringing you a bit of themselves. This will be a way for the directors to share a more personal side with the community. The idea for this “Director’s Corner” was discussed at our annual retreat and it was agreed that much of what is known of the directors is through an email address or a photo in the commUnity center. Sure, some directors have developed relationships with the community, but we also have new directors who are also new to the community. We hope you enjoy getting to know a bit more of the directors of Spencer Pride.
Up next is Joy, the Youth Empowerment Director!
I am Joy Hellman, Spencer Pride’s Youth Empowerment Director. I have a great love of youth and teens. I love the perspective they help me to have on life. I was a teacher for 33 years and loved it. I began to volunteer with Spencer Pride almost 6 years ago when my friend, Jessica Brinson suggested it after I lost my husband. My favorite part of volunteering is the friends I have made. My goal is to provide a safe space for teens to talk, have fun, and meet others. One of my favorite memories as a volunteer was when Spencer Pride hosted our first ever Iris Prom at Stable Studios. Seeing the teens so happy being themselves was an amazing experience!
I am recently retired, and have enjoyed traveling to visit family and to have fun. I love to hike in state and national parks. Some of my favorite trips have been to Yellowstone, Yosemite and the Redwood Forests, The Grand Canyon, The Smokey Mountains, and the Everglades. I grew up on Lake Michigan and love the dunes and beaches. I also love exploring Indiana State Parks!
In December I am participating in the Trevor Project 40 miles in 30 days fundraiser. The Trevor Project is a wonderful resource to help LGBTQ+ youth. It is a safe and judgement free place to talk, text, or chat. This is confidential, and youth ages 13 to 24 can get secure live help with a trained specialist or just chat.
