Here’s a bit of history from our director Judi Epp.
When Spencer Pride was formed, the focus was on local residents. We wanted the LGBT+ community to feel welcome here and that they belonged. We wanted them to know they didn’t have to move away to be themselves. And we didn’t just feel unwelcome in Spencer.
That feeling encompassed the entire state of Indiana. This was based on the lack of non-discrimination ordinances and the Indiana legislature’s effort to ban same sex marriage.
As we discussed our mission and our mission statement, we realized that as a minority, we needed allies to be successful. We also recognized that there are other minorities who don’t feel welcome here. That’s when we decided that our mission would be to “Make Indiana a More Welcoming Place for ALL People”.
